When we go out in the world our first assumption is that our enemies are "flesh and blood" and that the battle is one that happens in the here and now. Paul in Ephesians 6:10-18 says that the real war is one that happens in the "invisible world".

When we battle spiritual forces, they have ranks and generals and privates just like a real army. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. - Eph 6:12 Principalities - The highest up in Satan's Armies Powers - Next down in Satan's chain of command They may govern territories and countries... Rulers - Regional rulers, in charge of everyday wickedness and sins (see the character above) Spiritual wickedness in high places - False religion, the New Age, Paganism, Satanism
